HOW MUCH TIME IT WILL TAKE YOU:

Plan a day in Sion, so that you have enough time to enjoy this amazing city. The planning can be easily adapted to your desires. The best would be to spend one night on site, so that you can visit some other must-see places of Valais the second day. For instance, you could go visit the beautiful village of Lens and its statue of Christ-Roi, la Dixence, the biggest barrage of Europe, enjoy the wonderful view along the bisse of Tsittoret, or even go and enjoy a hot bath in the natural hot spring of Cambioula.

WHAT IT IS:

Here is the planning we propose to make the best of your day in Sion (hours are indicative and you should check the precise train schedule for the day you’re planning to go):

  • 9h-10h: Trip to Sion by train from Lausanne.
  • 10-12h: Visit of the city. We recommend to go to the old city, grab an ice cream at Hasta glace, visit the Tour des Sorciers, walk along the Grand Pont, check the Supersaxo house and finish by visiting the Basilica of Valère
  • 12h-13h: Lunch time. Picnic at the top of the Basilica of Valère with a view on the Valais.
  • 13h-14h30: Visit of the Castle of Tourbillon or another of the castles of Sion. If you’re a large group you can even contact the guide that we had to our event, Cédric Jossen. He’ll bring you to some amazing point of views in the castle and will tell you all about the history of Sion.
  • 14h30-17h30: Walk to Montorge. It is a wonderful place with a little lake and the ruins of a castle (yeah, there is a lot of castle in Sion, 4 in total). There is also a hill next to it, from where  you’ll be able to enjoy amazing views over the whole Valais. The walk to the lake is quite easy. The hardest part is to go to the top of the hill, but this part can be skipped quite easily if your feet are hurting. Here is the itinerary (in red).
  • 17h30-End of the day: To finish your day, you can stop at la place du Midi to enjoy a refreshing drink at one of its numerous terrasses.

You can also join a free walking city tour. You’ll find more info here
