HOW MUCH TIME IT WILL TAKE YOU:

We propose 2 itineraries. As you can see the Challenger hike takes a long full day. We recommend that you leave early in the morning from Lausanne.

  • Challenger Hike: 2h30 for the round trip by train, 5h for the hike.
  • Chill Hike: 3h20 for the round trip by train

WHAT IT IS:

The Rochers de Naye are an iconic place. It sits at 2042m right over the city of Montreux. If you look South, and West, you will see Mont Blanc and Leman. If you look East, you will see the Eiger. There are not many places, even in Switzerland, that can offer such a show! We’ll propose a short (chill) hike and a longer (challenger) hike.

Short hike: 4.65km long, 500m of positive elevation. Duration: ~2h. You’ll start the hike from “Jaman” train station directly, which is already high in the mountains and the train to get there has quite a nice scenery! Be aware that the first train from Montreux is at 9:11am, and the last from Rochers-de-Naye is at 6:11pm!

Longer hike: 12.35km long, 887m of positive elevation. Duration: ~5h. This time, you have to get to the “Haut-de-Caux” train station to start your hike. Be aware that the first train from Montreux is at 9:11am, and the last from Haut-de-Caux is at 6:34pm!

Alternatives: There are many other possibilities. You can for example start your hike from Montreux and do the full ascension (over 1650m of positive elevation). Another idea is to go to Montbovon and climb from the North (1250m of positive elevation and 30km). For the more ambitious, you can start from Roche, and go through Malatraix, Pertuis d’Aveneyre, Col de Chaude, Plan d’Areine, and finally the Rochers de Naye (2600m of positive elevation and 30km). In any case, take your time to plan your route thoroughly and to think about alternatives if the weather changes or if you are too tired to continue. Think about the last trains! They are rather early.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Short hike: If you leave Lausanne at 8:50am, then you should arrive at the top around 12pm, perfect timing for a wonderful lunch.

  • Take the IR 90 in direction of Brig.
  • Change trains in Montreux. You must join platform 8 to take the rack-and-pinion train in direction of Rochers-de-Naye. Beware that the rack-and-pinion train only stops on-demand. So, once you have passed the Paccot station (even if the train did not stop) you have to press the button to request a stop.
  • To get back, get in the train at Rochers-de-Naye which will bring you back down.
  • Go to Lausanne from Montreux.

Longer hike: If you leave Lausanne at 8:50am, then you should arrive at the top a bit after 12pm.

  • Take the IR 90 in direction of Brig.
  • Change trains in Montreux. There, you must join platform 8 to take the rack-and-pinion train in the direction of Rochers-de-Naye. Same here, the rack-and-pinion train only stops on-demand. So, once you have passed the Échets station (even if the train did not stop) you have to press the button to request a stop.
  • To get back, wait at the platform at Haut-de-Caux and the train will stop by itself.
  • Go to Lausanne from Montreux.

WHAT YOU NEED:

You will need:

  • Good shoes and good socks (maybe even a second pair if you go for the long hike!).
  • Water, lunch, and maybe some snacks.
  • Solar protection!
  • Raincoat and warm clothes. You never know how the weather might change up in the mountains.
  • Maybe a basic first aid kit. The longer hike is quite challenging and you’re never too safe. If you get badly injured, the emergency line in Switzerland is the 112. It works even when there is no network.
